Eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas could face an increased potential for periods of heavy rainfall during 2027 if the current El Niño remains influential into the spring. The developing climate pattern is already unusually strong. As of September 2026, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center indicates that El Niño is strengthening, with a high probability of becoming a very strong event during fall and winter 2026–27.

As we move through fall 2026 and look ahead toward winter and spring 2027, severe weather will remain something to watch across Heavener and LeFlore County. Damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes are all possible during this period. While spring remains the traditional focus for severe weather in eastern Oklahoma, strong storm systems can also produce severe thunderstorms during the fall and winter months.

I toured the Sallisaw Veterans Center last week with James Bynum, the executive director of the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs. It’s a spacious, beautiful facility with large private rooms and bathrooms, wide hallways and nice amenities.

Last week, I presented citations to Candice Hamilton and Tori Lopez. Both are LeFlore County 911 Center dispatchers who answered the call April 19 from Wister Police Chief William “Andy” Thompson after he was shot in an ambush.
