ONE YEAR AGO

2024– In high school football action, Heavener opened with a 23-14 win at Central, Poteau bounced back from last week’s loss at Booneville, Arkansas to defeat McAlester and former Coach Forrest Mazey, 16-14, Talihina downed Porter in its home opener, 44-25, and Arkoma pounded Canadian, 48-8, on the road. Panama defeated Spiro, 40-21, Thursday night and Pocola had a bye…Funeral services held for Wayne Plummer… Heavener’s cross country boys almost accomplished perfection in the Carl Albert State College meet Friday morning. The Wolves finished with 16 points, only one point off perfection and easily won the meet. Senior Seth Lynch was the meet champion and freshman Diego Sanchez placed second. Other Heavener runners receiving medals were Jerred Boss, Morgan Altstott, Isaac Cook, Parker Brand and Geren Palmer… Poteau, which stayed alive with a pair of wins Wednesday, plays Howe for the right to advance to Thursday’s championship game in the faast pitch softball LCT, with Pocola…The Poteau and Howe game starts at 5 p.m. with the winner advancing to the championship game at 7 p.m. If Pocola wins that game, the Lady Indians win the 2024 fast pitch softball LeFlore County Tournament.

2015—Wolves open with 39-20 win over Atoka at Harvey Stadium…Sheriff presents plan for dispatchers…County rural fire departments receive grants…HHS class of 1965 to hold reunion, attend football game…Unemployment rate drops in LeFlore County…Thor’s Hammer run scheduled for Sept. 26…Hodgen students of the month recognized…Homecoming royalty announced…Benefit dinner planned for Richard and Tammy Welch, who lost their home in a fire…Get a gallon of Highland milk for $3.99 at the Tote-A-Poke…Evangelist Johnny Montgomery is in revival at the Hontubby Church…Funeral services held for David Smallwood of Heavener…Heavener cross country runners Barbara Johnson and Iris Martinez both place in the top 10 at Henryetta meet

20 YEARS AGO

2005—Concern growing over doctors’ contracts with EOMC…Heavener water customers question bills…Voters to decide new fuel tax…Heavener comes from way behind to defeat Pocola in season football opener…Lady Wolves go 3-1 during the week.

30 YEARS AGO

1995—Parents ask that Jim Roll remain as the Heavener girls’ basketball coach…Fire burns 150 acres on Walker Mountain…EOMC announces plans to construct a new building…Heavener grad Lawrence Odom to perform at Kennedy Center…John Kannady, Myrna Dorsey named OCC employees of the month…Wolves win opener over Waldron.

1985—Heavener to open football season with Arkoma…Derek Cash receives master’s degree from OU…Benefit planned for Howe police…Heavener sales tax down for August…Heavener class of 195 plan 50th anniversary…Gary Hooper takes over management of Heavener Sonic.

50 YEARS AGO

1975—Heavener City Council approves purchase of a new truck from Hembree Chevrolet for $3,448.44…Kenneth Capps reports 0.55 inches of rain here Wednesday night…Jim Thacker collides with a 130-pound buck near Talimena Drive…Heavener Ledger is still 10 cents per copy…Bob Laval announces Emerald Vista on the Talimena Drive will be closed from November through May…A 21-year-old-Muse man reported missing from his home was found in good condition one miles from his home…Shalon Rock will perform in concert at the city part…Bill Hembree Chevrolet is clearing out all 1975 models. A new 1975 Cheynne truck is only $4,309…Call Oren Coffman for all your commercial and residential repairs…Wood ‘N’ Rail Restaurant has a Mexican buffet every Thursday…Walt  Disney’s “The Hound That Thought He Was A Racoon” is playing at the Liberty Theater this week.

60 YEARS AGO

1965—Heavener residents contribute $250 to fund for Heavener Police Chief Killion’s family after he was beaten while trying to arrest gamblers at a horse race west of town…Gas prices hit a record low of 19.9 cents per gallon…Bob Terry, former principal at Hontubby School, has joined the teaching staff at the Hodgen Job Corps…Vera Hooper will take his place in teaching the four upper grades at Hontubby…Richard Duty, a local rancher, has been named Heavener principal…Highfill’s 66 Station in Howe has a 1963 Mercury Meteor for sale…The Heavener Otasco Store has new Brunswick Tubeless Tires for sale…James Garner and Elke Sommer star in “The Art of Love” at the Liberty Theater this week.

70 YEARS AGO

1955—Game Ranger Homer Johnston has arrested two men for shooting dove from an automobile. The pair pled guilty and were fined $50 plus court costs…M.A. Eddy, Heavener Trainmaster, has named Bobby Lee Fox to the post of trainmaster’s clerk. Fox is a 1953 graduate of Heavener High School….The new Holt Telephone directory is going to press…Heavener Auto Sales has a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Aire  convertible for sale…Get fried chicken every day at the Cloverleaf Dairy Cream in Heavener.

90 YEARS AGO

1935—William Parks, 57, was found dead at the end of a tunnel in the Dawes No. 5 mine. It was determined he died of “black damp” a disease fall falls miners…Henry Roop brought in the first cotton of the year Saturday morning, The corn was grown in Lovings…Cattle in Heavener have doubled the last five years…The coal season has started with a rush…Young’s Mercantile Co. has new fall suits for sale for men from $14.75 to $22.50…G.I. Bullard at the barber shop wants to buy Leghorn pullets.

100 YEARS AGO

1925—Two area men are in the county jail after stealing cotton sacks and a tent from Alfred Johnson in Heavener…Any person operating a motor vehicle in Heavener must close their exhaust cut-outs when entering the city. Failure to do so will result in arrest and conviction…The LeFlore County Fair opens today in Poteau…Annual Hodgen picnic drew about 1,000 people… The fair is always popular…The Willige Grocery has purchased the stock and fixtures of the Polly Ann Grocery and the Reynolds-Davis Grocery Company of Heavener…G.L. Biser Service Station vulcanizes all tire repairs. No cold patching is used…Get Wolverine 1,000 mile work shoes at R.E. Marr Co. in Heavener.
