2024—Wolves lose at Charleston, Arkansas, now 2-1 heading into district play…Carl Albert State College’s Allied Health programs are showing growth and success with record-breaking enrollment figures and job placement rates. Allied Health has now become the largest academic program at the college, attracting students wanting careers in healthcare… The Heavener boys had a perfect score of 15 in winning the Wister cross country meet Monday. Seth Lynch was the overall meet champion. Parker Brand, Diego Cruz, Isaac Cook, Morgan Altstatt, Jerred Boss and Geren Palmer all medaled… A Poteau woman died approximately 9:38 p.m. Saturday in a motorcycle wreck on the old Wister Highway, around 3.3 miles northeast of Wister. Stacy Raines, 53, was pronounced deceased at the scene by LeFlore County EMS from injuries sustained in the accident. Her body was transported to Evans & Miller Funeral Home.

1975—Citizens help capture four escapees from the correctional facility at Hodgen…Last of the water lines in the way of construction of a four-lane highway through Heavener have been removed. Four lanes will be constructed from the south to the north of the city in the near future…A fun time is expected at the annual Lion’s Club carnival Saturday in downtown Heavener…The new Chevrolet Chevette compact cars are on display at Hembree Chevrolet…Bill Smittle has a 1971 Honda for sale…If you have real estate for sale, call Freddie and Sux Cox at Heavener Cox Realty…The Hub Café in Heavener has three hamburgers for $1 on Friday and Saturday afternoons…Lloyd’s TV Center in Heavener is having a huge sale.

1965—Heavener Lions Club carnival is Saturday night in downtown Heavener…Two Poteau boys steal car and drive it to Clayton where they had car trouble. They brought it back to Poteau. They pulled the engine, then decided to abandon the project. They borrowed a drive to tow it to a strip pit where they dumped the stollen vehicle, which also took the borrowed truck in with it. Deputy Jess Wells has signed confessions from the two boys…New 1966 Chevrolets will be on display the next week at Hembree Chevrolet…Dr. G.M. Hogaboom has announced he will close his practice and join the medical staff at OSU…A hopper car loaded with chips went off the tracks in the KCS yard Saturday, taking a caboose with it…Jim & M’s Tavern is now open south of Heavener…Leland Harrell has a 1950 Chevrolet truck for sale…Lee Marvin and Jane Fonda star in “Cat Ballou” at the Liberty Theater this week.

1955—Oklahoma Governor Raymond Gary told a crowd at Wister Lake that Highway 270 will soon be paved to the Arkansas state line…Harlan Powers is said to be improving at an Alamosa, Colorado hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile wreck…Approximately 181 head o cattle are being groomed for the 18th annual community livestock and poultry show sponsored by the Heavener FFA…Jack Johnson at the Ledger has a 1941 Chevrolet business coupe for sale for $135…Keith Lumber Co. will have its grand opening Oct. 1.
90 YEARS AGO
1935—Lake on Cedar Creek south of Heavener is once more under construction. The lake will cover 200-300 acres when completed. The project has been on hold for more than a year due to lack of funding…Flood lights for the football field have arrived and hopefully will be installed in time for the football game here Oct. 11…Heavener American Legion has submitted an offer to the KCS for the old Van Noy Hotel building in the train yard here. The Legion wants the building for a community building and Legion Hut…Heavener Auto Sales has several used cars for trave for cows, hogs and goats…Shirley Temple stars in “Curly Top” at the Liberty Theater this week.
100 YEARS AGO
1925—After remaining idle for more than four months, authorities at Howe suddenly began enforcing the “stop at railroad crossings” law last week. A number of arrests were made, including the Ledger’s editor…The editor also took exception to a recent editorial in the Poteau paper stating that crime was down due to prohibition. Court records show LeFlore County will actually try more cases than in any term in history…The beautiful new Chevrolet cars are on display at the Heavener Auto Sales Company…The Ledger is selling old rolls of paper for a nickel.
