2024— LeFlore County football teams went 4-0 in Friday’s games. Heavener opened with a 23-14 win at Central, Poteau bounced back from last week’s loss at Booneville, Arkansas to defeat McAlester and former Coach Forrest Mazey, 16-14, Talihina downed Porter in its home opener, 44-25, and Arkoma pounded Canadian, 48-8, on the road. Panama defeated Spiro, 40-21, Thursday night and Pocola had a bye…Services held for Phyllis Heavener of the Conser community… Pocola sailed through the 2024 fast pitch softball LeFlore County Tournament undefeated and improved to 19-0 overall with a 12-0 win over Poteau in Thursday night’s championship game.

2015—Three Heavener girls named to LeFlore County Tournament all-county team after finishing second in the tournament…Jodie Hill selected Heavener football homecoming queen. Her escort was Kenny Morrison…Thor’s Hammer run coming Sept. 26…Heavener school enrollment stands at 1,066, down slightly from the previous year…School Board hears proposal on a new fishing team for the school…Revival in the Valley is planned for Oct. 15-17…Haw Creek Festival is Nov. 7…Wolves look to rebound after losing to Vian.

1975—Hang gliders flying off east side of Poteau Mountain…Dr. Gary Youree to discuss pros and cons of fluoridation in the city water supply at the Thursday meeting of the Jaycees…New gun club established in Heavener…Hodgen principal Herbert Reading announces a bond issue is needed to complete new gym…Roger Mead and others have filed a $100,000 lawsuit against the Heavener City Council, Police Department and City Manager saying that Police Chief Billy Bozarth has been trying to turn the city into a mini police state…In a related case, Mead and another Heavener man have been arrested and charged with pouring sugar in the gas tank of Bozarth’s 1969 Mercury automobile…George Waits has a 1963 Ford truck for sale….Imogene’s Cut and Curl will open Oct. 1…Dance with Hank Thompson and the Brazos Valley Boys Saturday at the Green Country Dance Land…An 8-pack of 16-ounce Pepsi bottles is just $1.19 at Boyd’s Food Star…Robert Redford stars in “The Great Waldo Pepper” this week at the Liberty Theater.

Franklin s 1964 Ford Galaxie for sale…Sandra Dee and Peter Fonda star in “Tammy and the Doctor” this week at the Liberty Theater.

1955—Harlan Powers and James McBride of Zoe were seriously injured in an auto accident near Aurora, Colorado. Bill Lowe was driving the car but was not seriously injured…T.A. Westmoreland will open a new Ford dealership in Heavener on East First Street…Auction of the ranch of Caryl Bender near Hodgen nets $4,631 Tuesday…New car battery is just $9.98 and installed for free at Otasco in Heavener…H. . Griffin has a Hudson 6 automobile for sale.

1935—O.C. Buschow, a long-time resident of Stapp was killed in an auto accident near Red Oak while he was en route to Oklahoma City…Local miners join national strike…Heavener Athletic Association has decided to install flood lighting at Ward Park for the high school football season. Lights will be taken down if the park is needed for a baseball game…Charles Crawford of Heavener accepts position as special agent for the Frisco Railroad…Heavener Auto Sales is selling a T-Model Ford Pickup for $35…Dick Powell and Joan Blondell star in “Broadway Gondolier” at the Liberty Theater this week.
100 YEARS AGO
1925—All cotton in the area is ripe and ready to be picked…Roads are expected to open soon from Heavener to Monroe via Morris Creek Road…Road south of Heavener expected to be in good shape soon…Frank Reeves, who pitched for the Heavener Blues and Dale Cunningham were pinned under their Ford car, which overturned with them near Mena. Reeves died from injuries while Cunningham was not seriously injured…Ride the Red Ball Bus between Heavener and Fort Smith.
