Heavener wins over Verdigris in the opening round of the Class 3A soccer playoffs at Heavener Monday, 3-2.

After being tied at one at the half, Heavener scored two early goals in the second period by Michael Montoyo and Julian Sanchez to take a commanding 3-1 lead over the Cardinals, then held off a late rally by the visitors to clinch the win.

Heavener advances to play Casady Thursday in Oklahoma City in a second-round matchup. The two teams played last year with eventual state champion Casady defeating Heavener, 5-0, also in Oklahoma City.
