The No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners defeated the No. 15 Michigan Wolverines 24-13 in football Saturday night at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman.
The game marked just the second all-time meeting between the two programs. The attendance for the evening was 84,107.
Read more: Sooners outlast Wolverines, 24-13The Sooners established an early lead, with quarterback John Mateer scoring a rushing touchdown and throwing a touchdown pass to Deion Burks. This gave Oklahoma a 14-0 lead by the end of the first half. Mateer finished the night with 270 passing yards and 74 rushing yards. For Michigan, freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood completed 9 of 24 passes for 142 yards and was under duress for much of the game.
The Wolverines’ sole touchdown came on the first play of the second half, a 75-yard rushing touchdown by Justice Haynes. This cut Oklahoma’s lead to 14-7. Haynes had a productive night, accumulating 125 rushing yards on 19 carries. Michigan added a field goal later in the third quarter to bring the score to 14-10. Oklahoma responded in the fourth quarter with a field goal, extending their lead to 17-10.
A Michigan missed field goal in the fourth quarter kept the score at 17-10, leaving the Wolverines a touchdown and two-point conversion away from tying the game. However, Oklahoma’s offense controlled the clock late, with a 16-play, 78-yard drive that consumed 8 minutes and 27 seconds. This drive concluded with a 21-yard field goal by Tate Sandell, securing the 24-13 victory for the Sooners with less than two minutes remaining.
Overall, Oklahoma outgained Michigan 408 to 288 in total yards. Oklahoma also had a significant advantage in first downs (22 to 12) and time of possession (32:12 to 27:48). The Sooners’ defense held Michigan to just 13 points and forced two turnovers.
