I toured the Sallisaw Veterans Center last week with James Bynum, the executive director of the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs. It’s a spacious, beautiful facility with large private rooms and bathrooms, wide hallways and nice amenities.

Last week, I presented citations to Candice Hamilton and Tori Lopez. Both are LeFlore County 911 Center dispatchers who answered the call April 19 from Wister Police Chief William “Andy” Thompson after he was shot in an ambush.

I delivered 65 cases of water to all the fire departments in my district last week, a way to show my appreciation for all of the firefighters who have been out in the extreme heat fighting multiple fires.

I spent a few days last week visiting schools in House District 3 passing out copies of the U.S. Constitution for every eighth-grade student. I visited schools in Arkoma, Cameron, Heavener, Hodgen, Howe, Monroe, Panama, Pocola, Poteau, Shady Point, Spiro and Wister.

We had a great meeting last week with Doug Linehan, the executive director of the Oklahoma Tax Commission. We had 28 attendees. He spent more than an hour speaking and answering questions from individuals about their taxes and returns and from tax preparers. He explained where the agency was when he took the job as director, where they are now and where he hopes to go in the future.
