Nearly three centuries later, on January 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany by President Paul von Hindenburg. This event, known as the Machtergreifung (“seizure of power”), signaled the end of the Weimar Republic and the rapid rise of the Nazi regime, setting the stage for World War II and the Holocaust.
