9-year-old Shady Point boy drowns in LeFlore County pond

A 9-year-old Shady Point boy drowned Tuesday in a private pond north of Spiro, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The drowning occurred at approximately 4:38 p.m. Tuesday at a pond on Highline Road, about two miles northwest of Spiro, OHP said. The boy, whose name is being withheld, was recovered in approximately 18 feet of water about 40 yards from the west shoreline at approximately 12:40 p.m. Wednesday.

A personal flotation device was not in use at the time of the drowning.

The incident remains under investigation.

Trooper Scott Lee of OHP’s Marine Enforcement Division, Troop W, is investigating. He was assisted by Trooper Stan Roedenbeck, Trooper Cody Cross, Trooper Ryan Williams, Trooper Brad Giulioli and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Dive Team.
