Hall about sports
June 27, 2026
Good morning, sports fans! Welcome to today’s edition of Hall about sports, keeping you connected to everything from the local Oklahoma gridiron circuit to the major national headlines, including a full wrap-up of yesterday’s Major League action and the FIFA World Cup.
OSSAA Summer “Dead Period” Begins Today
It is officially quiet on the high school sports front across the state. The mandatory OSSAA Summer Dead Period kicks off today, June 27, and runs through July 5. For the next nine days, all member school athletic facilities are completely closed, and coaches are barred from having any training or practice contact with secondary student-athletes. It’s a hard-earned window for families and coaches to recharge before August two-a-days arrive.
Big Football Commitments to Air Force
Three prominent Oklahoma high school gridiron stars have officially committed to play Division I football for the Air Force Academy:
-
Gage Gibbons (Deer Creek): The All-State wide receiver and blistering track champion (10.32s in the 100m) announced his pledge.
-
Jalen Lane (Tuttle): A massive piece of Tuttle’s 14-0 Class 4A state title run last year (1,319 all-purpose yards, 18 TDs) is also heading to the Academy.
-
Braeden Baker (Broken Arrow): The standout running back rounds out the trio of Oklahomans making the leap to the Mountain West program. (Good catch on the earlier mix-up—Bixby remains the powerhouse holding the Class 6A-I state crown!)
Oklahoma State Gridiron Ramping Up for Big 12 Media Days
Fresh off landing a massive commitment from 2027 running back TJ Lewis, the Oklahoma State Cowboys football program is finalizing its travel squad for early July’s Big 12 Media Days. Head coach Eric Morris will be bringing four standout Cowboys to the event: Drew Mestemaker, Caleb Hawkins, Jaleel Johnson, and Ethan Wesloski.
Oklahoma City Thunder Trade Isaiah Joe to Pistons
On the NBA front, the Oklahoma City Thunder continue an aggressive roster and financial overhaul. The Thunder have agreed to trade elite bench sharpshooter Isaiah Joe to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for two second-round draft picks. Joe connected on 41.5% of his three-pointers over four years in OKC. This move follows a trade of Aaron Wiggins to Atlanta and successfully sheds tens of millions of dollars from the Thunder’s potential looming luxury tax bill.
Razorbacks Set SEC Matchups & Score in NBA Draft
Just across the border, the Arkansas Razorbacks basketball program finalized its home-and-away SEC opponents for the upcoming 2026-27 season. Alongside permanent rivals LSU and Missouri, the Hogs will play a home-and-home series against Alabama. Meanwhile, the program is celebrating the NBA Draft, where Trevon Brazile and Meleek Thomas heard their names called back-to-back, anchoring a strong draft class for Coach Cal.
National Sports Headlines

Mets Fire Manager Carlos Mendoza: The New York Mets officially fired manager Carlos Mendoza midway through a highly disappointing season that currently leaves the Mets at the bottom of the NL East.
-
Angels Dismiss GM Perry Minasian: The Los Angeles Angels have parted ways with General Manager Perry Minasian mid-season during what is shaping up to be a sixth consecutive losing or disappointing year under his tenure.
