April 25, 1926: Exactly 100 years ago today, the Kansas City Southern Railway was reporting record freight tonnage passing through the Heavener rail yards.
This era represented the “Golden Age” of the railroad in LeFlore County, as the expansion of the coal and timber industries turned the region into a vital artery for the American heartland.
Many of the historic brick buildings seen in downtown Heavener today were constructed during this mid-1920s boom period.
