Hot and humid weather continues across LeFlore County heading into the July 4th weekend, with isolated afternoon thunderstorms possible in the terrain areas of far eastern Oklahoma over the next few days.

Today, Friday, July 3 — Hot and humid with a slight 15 percent chance of an isolated afternoon thunderstorm, mainly in the higher terrain. High near 94. Organized severe weather isn’t expected, but any storm that forms could bring a brief heavy downpour and gusty winds.

Saturday, July 4 — Hot and humid for Independence Day, with a low chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. High near 93. The National Weather Service notes Mother Nature may add some fireworks of her own to southeast Oklahoma and western Arkansas — if you’re headed to an outdoor celebration, keep an eye on the sky, though widespread storm activity isn’t expected.

Sunday, July 5 — Rain chances increase to 35 percent as better coverage for showers and storms begins spreading west. High near 87 — noticeably cooler than the past several days.

Monday, July 6 — A much better chance for widespread rain, up to 75 percent. High near 92. This looks like the day the extended dry, hot stretch finally breaks.

The bottom line for July 4th: Expect it to stay hot and humid through the holiday, with only a low, isolated chance of a stray storm — not enough to plan around, but enough to watch the radar if you’re outdoors for an extended stretch. Stay hydrated, seek shade during peak afternoon heat, and check on elderly neighbors and pets. Better rain chances arrive behind the holiday, continuing to build into early next week.
