A marginal risk of severe storms is in place this afternoon and evening for much of eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas, with pockets of damaging winds up to 70 mph the main threat, along with the potential for marginally severe hail.

Today, Saturday, July 11 — Hot with a high near 96 and a 35 percent chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Some storms could turn strong to severe, mainly focused on gusty winds. Keep an eye on the sky if you have outdoor plans this afternoon.

Sunday, July 12 — A marginal risk of severe storms continues across southeast Oklahoma into the afternoon. High near 91, a noticeable step down from the recent heat, with a 15 percent chance of showers or storms.

Monday, July 13 — Hot and mostly dry returns, with a high near 94 and no measurable rain chance.

Tuesday, July 14 — Hot with a high near 94 and a 20 percent chance of afternoon storms.

Wednesday, July 15 — High near 88 with a 30 percent chance of showers and storms, as slightly cooler air moves in behind the midweek system.

The bottom line: After a hot stretch that included a heat advisory Friday with heat index values up to 106, storm chances pick up today and Sunday with a marginal severe risk both days — mainly damaging wind gusts and isolated large hail. Heat returns by the middle of next week. Stay weather-aware this afternoon and evening, and have a way to get warnings if storms fire up near LeFlore County.
