Poteau will try to move one step closer to a playoff spot when the Pirates visit McLain in a 4A-4 district football game Thursday night at 7.
The Pirates are currently in a three-way tie with Ada and Stilwell for third place in the district standings. Poteau won the head-to-head against Ada while Stilwell defeated the Pirates.
Poteau is 5-3 overall, 3-2 in district play. McLain is 2-6 and 0-5.
While Poteau will need a lot of help to get back in the race for the district championship as Sallisaw has a two-game lead going into a game with Hilldale this week before playing at Poteau next week. The Pirates are also a game back of Broken Bow, so the Savages would need to lose their final two games while Poteau won both to climb into second place.
Broken Bow hosts Ada this week before playing Mannford next week, so the two losses might be a stretch.
Poteau’s best chart for the playoffs is to win both regular-season games, against McLain on the road tonight and at home next week against undefeated Sallisaw.
