Hot and humid weather continues across LeFlore County today and will persist right through the July 4th weekend, with a Heat Advisory in effect for parts of the region as heat index values climb.

Today, Thursday, July 2 — Sunny and hot. High near 95. Heat index values will run several degrees above the actual temperature — take precautions with outdoor activities and watch for signs of heat stress.

Friday, July 3 — Hot and humid, with a 35 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms developing, mainly in the afternoon and evening. High near 95. Any storms that form could bring brief heavy downpours and gusty winds, though widespread severe weather isn’t expected.

Saturday, July 4 — Hot and humid for Independence Day, with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. High near 93. Mother Nature may add her own fireworks to the mix — if you’re headed to an outdoor celebration, keep an eye on the sky during the afternoon and evening, and have a backup plan in case a stray storm rolls through.

Sunday, July 5 — Rain chances jump significantly, up to 70 percent, as a better chance for widespread showers and storms moves in. High near 87 — a nice break from the heat.

Monday, July 6 — Scattered showers still possible with a 30 percent chance. High near 87.

The bottom line for July 4th: Expect it to be hot, muggy and mostly dry through the afternoon cookouts, with a real but not overwhelming chance of a passing shower or storm by evening. Stay hydrated, seek shade during peak heat, and check on elderly neighbors and pets. Rain chances increase noticeably behind the holiday, so if outdoor plans stretch into the weekend, keep watching the forecast.
