Blast from the past: Farmers haul cotton through historic downtown Heavener

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Today’s Blast from the Past takes us back to Heavener sometime after 1910, when local farmers hauled their cotton harvest through the heart of downtown. The historic Bliss Building stands in the background of the photo, a familiar Heavener landmark from the era. Also visible is the old R.L. Walker building, once located on the corner of East First Street and East Avenue D — a structure that no longer stands today.

This glimpse into Heavener’s agricultural roots highlights how central cotton farming once was to the local economy in the early 20th century, with farmers bringing their crops straight into town for sale and processing.
