Iris Austin Weatherford, 91, of Broken Arrow (formerly of Poteau) died July 16, 2026 in Broken Arrow and was born June 13, 1935 in Poteau to Doc and Allie Austin. The family moved to Howe in 1937. Iris graduated from Howe High School and moved back to Poteau in 1957, where she lived until 2010.

LeFlore County commissioners approve fire department transfers, bridge bundle for five-year plan
The LeFlore County Board of County Commissioners approved a lease purchase for a Howe Fire Department truck, transferred receiving officer duties for Summerfield Fire Department, and added 12 bridges to the county’s five-year plan during a regular meeting Monday.
County roads and bridges plan updated
The Oklahoma Transportation Commission recently approved the county improvements for roads and bridges (CIRB) plan for fiscal years 2027 to 2030. The updated five-year plan includes nearly $950 million in scheduled upgrades to 808 miles of roads and 238 bridges that are maintained by the counties rather than by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
