- 527 – Byzantine Emperor Justin I named his nephew Justinian I as co-ruler and successor. Justinian would go on to become one of the most influential rulers in history, overseeing the creation of the Justinian Code that shaped Western legal systems for centuries.
- 1748 – The ruins of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, were rediscovered by Spanish engineer Roque Joaquín de Alcubierre. This find would later provide an extraordinary window into daily life in the Roman Empire.
