Events that happened on Oct. 10 throughout LeFlore County history.
1858 — Inaugural Butterfield Overland Mail Trail Finishes Westbound Run The first westbound Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach officially pulled into San Francisco at 7:30 a.m., completing a 24-day journey across the country that brought national attention to Indian Territory. The historic northern route traversed eastern LeFlore County, stopping at local waystations including Walker’s Station at Skullyville, Trahern’s Station, and Pusley’s Station. The journey was extensively documented by Waterman L. Ormsby, a correspondent for the New York Herald and the only through-passenger on the historic maiden run.
1871 — Choctaw Agency Post Office Discontinued at Skullyville Federal postal authorities officially discontinued operations at the Choctaw Agency post office. Situated near present-day Spiro, Skullyville had long served as the primary administrative capital of the Choctaw Nation’s Moshulatubbee District and the distribution point for tribal annuities. Mail operations serving area residents and merchants were reorganized just down the road weeks later with the establishment of the Oak Lodge post office.
1887 — Cavanal Post Office Established The U.S. Post Office Department established a new post office designated as Cavanal in the Choctaw Nation, appointing Samuel P. Glenn as its first postmaster. Located approximately three miles northeast of present-day Wister near the base of Cavanal Hill, the office served area homesteaders and rail crews until regional mail routes shifted to growing hubs in Wister and Poteau, leading to its closure in 1901.
