Welfare check turned deadly on Sunday morning near Wister resulting in the death of a sheriff’s deputy and the injury of a local police officer. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Edgar Lara, is currently in custody following a tense, hourslong standoff.

- The Initial Call: Around 11 a.m., law enforcement responded to a residence on U.S. Highway 270 near Wister to conduct a welfare check.
- The Ambush: Upon arrival, officers from the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office, Wister Police Department, and U.S. Forest Service were immediately met with multiple rounds of gunfire.
- Casualties: * A LeFlore County Deputy was struck and tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
- A Wister Police Officer sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to a nearby hospital; they are currently listed in stable condition.
- The Standoff: Following the initial exchange, Lara barricaded himself inside the home. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol arrived to assist in the containment.
- Surrender: After several hours, Lara surrendered to authorities at approximately 4:00 p.m. and was booked into the LeFlore County Jail.
Status of the Investigation
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) has taken the lead on the case at the request of local officials.
Current Focus: Investigators are currently processing the crime scene and interviewing witnesses to determine the specific circumstances that necessitated the welfare check and sparked the violent escalation.
While Lara is in custody, the investigation remains active. Formal charges have not yet been filed, and authorities have withheld the names of the fallen deputy and the injured officer pending further notifications.
